UNDER THE BUFFALO: FROM MINISKIRT TO HIJAB
Under the Buffalo Series: "From Miniskirt to Hijab." Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. At eighteen, she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. Saper's memoir, From Miniskirt to Hijab, recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community—primarily the disparate religions and cultures. Saper will discuss her experiences and offer insight into the global fight for women’s rights. A book signing will follow the presentation. Copies of From Miniskirt to Hijab will be available for sale at the event.

August 2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave American women the right to vote. Evanston women were integral to the local, state, and national suffrage movements. Women such as Frances Willard, Elizabeth Boynton Harbert, and Catharine Waugh McCulloch created successful strategies in support of broader citizenship rights for all women. Lori Osborne, EHC Historian and Director of the Evanston Women’s History Project, will give a talk based on her research. Reception at 6:30 PM.

Out of Space 2020: William "Smokey" Robinson, Jr. is a legendary singer-songwriter, record producer, record executive and co-founder of Motown Records. Robinson and his group, the Miracles met Berry Gordy after a failed audition for singer Jackie Wilson’s managers. Gordy was impressed with Robinson's vocals and ambitious songwriting. With his help, they released, "Got a Job.” It was the beginning of a successful collaboration and the beginnings of Motown.
